[Speaking at the beginning of the concert]
This concert of Rachmaninoff’s belongs to the greatest works of the piano repertory. Everybody knows it. It demands an unbelievable level of virtuosity. I have listened to the recordings of Rachmaninoff himself; the way he performs his own compositions is inimitable. For every pianist, it’s a goal to be someday able to play this concert. And every audience adores this piece. When I immerse myself in it as a part of the audience, it evokes so many feelings in me; it really stirs me into life.
[And at the end of the concert]
It was so deeply moving, seeing these two together… The first time I experienced them perform together, was in Vienna. One sensed the same energy: the melting of their energies into each other. I know Khatia well, so I do know how special it is to stand with her on stage. Hers and Noseda’s energy develop an explosive power which is magnificently fitting to this concert. The audience was completely taken in, and I myself as a part of it, was overwhelmed by their interpretation.
